A Promising Season Becomes a lot Less Promising
Ohio State basketball fans just have to be sick over the Evan Turner injury.
Ohio State junior guard Evan Turner has been diagnosed with a transverse process fracture on the second and third lumbar vertebra of his spine. He is expected to miss the next eight weeks, Vince O’Brien, athletic trainer for the Buckeyes’ men’s basketball team, said in a release from OSU.
After eight games, Turner led Ohio State in scoring (18.5 ppg.), rebounding (11.4 rpg.), assists (47), field goals (62) and free throws made (22). He is shooting 61 percent from the field (62-102) and was the only Big Ten player averaging a double-double.
This is just devastating news for the team. He's irreplaceable. Their leading scorer, leading rebounder and ball distributor, gone. They don't really have another playmaker. Guys like Buford and Diebler get their shots because of Evan Turner. Those shots are going to come tougher now.
8 weeks takes him past the West Virginia game. I'd say his return would be against Iowa or Minnesota. Gives him 9 games or so to get back in the flow before the Big 10 and NCAA tournament.
Ohio State should still have enough to get into the NCAA's but this was a team that if things fell right, could have made a run deep into the tournament.
Maybe they still can if he is able to get healthy and get in condition in time.

This Week's Vertical Thought
The United Church of God has posted this week's Vertical Thought commentary titled "Feel Good vs. Real Good".
It asks what the purpose of going to a church is? Is it just to feel good about yourself or is there more to it?

Happy Trails
to any presidential aspirations Mike Huckabee had. His commutation of apparent cop killer Maurice Clemmons ended that. His opponents in the republican primaries wouldn't have to be crass enough to bring it up. The bloggers will do the work for them.
Balancing justice, mercy, forgiveness, fairness and wisdom are impossible tasks for man to undertake. The person that sits there, pretends to play God, and thinks they know another's heart is bound to make mistakes. In this case it seems a grotesque mistake was made that cost at least 4 people their lives.
Just a hunch, but it's probably going to be tough for a while for an inmate to his sentence commuted. Any governor with higher ambitions is going to think long and hard about the decision.

Browns vs Bengals
Round 2 today in the battle of Ohio. There's no real reason to expect the Browns to beat the Bengals. I'm just looking to see if Brady Quinn can put a second good game together. Should be a good test for him.
It's one thing to do it against the Lions, it's another to do it against the Bengals.
The Bengals ain't the Lions.

Happy Trails
To Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis. The handwriting was on the wall when he was told not to stay on the west coast after the Stanford game. That's kind of like me going into work and my boss saying she needs to see me and not to bother punching in. Although it's not official yet it's all but done.
Once you have been proclaimed as a genius there's no where to go but down. Charlie Weis brought a lot of promises to Notre Dame but didn't fulfill them. The beginning of the end was when Ohio State and Jim Tressel exposed him at the Fiesta Bowl.
Also happy trails to Allen Iverson, although I bet we see him in uniform again.
I have to admit I loved watching him play. I know he was a flawed player. He was a ball hog, never bought into a team concept and was only happy when he was the center of attention.
On the other hand there was something amazing about seeing a guy his size fly all over the court without regard for his body. There are plenty of less than flattering things that could be said about him but no one could say he didn't play hard every time he stepped on the court.

After last night Florida State coach Bobby Bowden may be on the stagecoach out of town also. That's too bad. I've always enjoyed him but he's a classic case of someone who stayed around too long. Joe Paterno was headed down that road a few years ago but got things turned around. It doesn't look like Bobby Bowden can.

Tiger Drives to the Right Rough
News came out earlier today of the Tiger Woods single car accident. Although initially the reports were all that he had serious injuries it appears now, from what is being released, that he'll be ok. The reports seemed to be confined to facial injuries.
As a golf fan and an admirer of Tiger's dominance on the course I was hoping things weren't as bad as it initially sounded.
Up to this point most of Tiger's driving problems this year have been confined to the golf course.
It's curious that the police reports weren't filed until nearly 12 hours later.

The First Snow
Today we get the first snow of the season. Not going to stick on the roads but it's coming down at a pretty good clip.
I'm a big snow fan. More the better.
